Most planning timelines read like a checklist written by a tax accountant. This one is shorter, quieter, and arranged the way a wedding actually unfolds — first the room, then the people, then, very last, the centerpieces.

  1. 12 Months Out

    The quiet beginning.

    Settle the season, the rough guest count, and the budget. Tour two or three venues — no more. Begin a vision board so every later decision has something to answer to.

  2. 10 Months Out

    Sign the room.

    Book the venue and the date. Reserve a photographer and, if you want one, a planner. These three calendars fill the fastest in any given city.

  3. 9 Months Out

    Send the first whisper.

    Mail save-the-dates. Book the officiant, the band or DJ, and your caterer if the venue does not provide one. Begin shopping for the dress and suiting now — alterations take longer than anyone tells you.

  4. 7 Months Out

    Build the table.

    Choose florals, rentals, and stationery. Block hotel rooms for guests traveling in. Lock the honeymoon framework, even if the details come later.

  5. 5 Months Out

    The composition takes shape.

    Order invitations. Plan the rehearsal dinner. Choose your cake, your menu, and your bar program. Decide on transportation for the wedding party.

  6. 3 Months Out

    The fine seams.

    Mail invitations eight weeks out. Finalize the ceremony script and write your vows. Have your first dress fitting. Confirm every vendor in writing.

  7. 1 Month Out

    Tighten gently.

    Final headcount to the caterer. Seating chart drafted, then redrafted. Confirm timing with the photographer, band, and officiant. Final fitting. Marriage license.

  8. 1 Week Out

    Stop adding things.

    Deliver final payments. Pack for the honeymoon. Hand the day-of timeline to whoever is running the room. Then put the planner down and let it be a wedding.
